Everything you need to know
Answers to the questions families ask most often before joining.
What age can children start karate?
We welcome children from around 5 years old, although younger students may begin gradually depending on their individual development.
Our classes help children build coordination, confidence, discipline, and respect while learning traditional karate.
Do I need any previous experience?
No. Beginners are always welcome.
Our instructors guide students step by step, from the basic movements and etiquette through to more advanced karate training.
Students with previous experience may also continue their karate journey with recognition of their existing skills and grades.
For your first class, please wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and bring a water bottle.
A karate uniform (gi) is not required for your first visit.
What should I bring to my first class?
How much does training cost?
Fees vary depending on the dojo and class schedule.
New students are welcome to try their first two classes free before deciding to join.
If you choose to continue, costs include membership, karate uniform (gi), club badge, and term tuition fees.
What are the benefits of karate training?
Daily verbal handovers, our secure parent app for daily notes and photos, a weekly newsletter, and termly learning summaries keep you closely connected to your child’s day. Our door is always open for a conversation.
What makes Itosu-Ryu Karate different?
Itosu-Ryu places a strong emphasis on Kata, the traditional patterns of karate techniques.
Kata develops movement, balance, concentration, and understanding of karate principles.
Students also practise Bunkai (application of techniques) and Kumite (sparring) to develop a deeper understanding of karate.
Are your instructors qualified and is training safe?
Yes.
Our instructors are experienced practitioners of Itosu-Ryu Karate-Do and are committed to providing safe and supportive training.
All instructors follow appropriate child safety requirements and maintain a positive learning environment for students of all ages.
No.
Competition is optional. Students can enjoy karate for fitness, confidence, discipline, and personal development.
For students who wish to compete, Itosu-Kai has a proud history of supporting successful athletes at state, national, and international levels.
Do students have to compete?
Can I train at other Itosu-Kai dojos around the world?
Yes.
As part of the global Itosu-Kai community, students have the opportunity to connect and train with other Itosu-Kai dojos around the world.
If you are travelling to Japan or another country, you are welcome to experience training at other Itosu-Kai locations and continue your karate journey wherever you go.
Are there opportunities to participate in international events?
Yes.
Students who wish to challenge themselves through competition may have opportunities to participate in regional, national, and international events.
Itosu-Kai holds a World Tournament every four years, hosted in different locations around the world, including Japan. Students who meet the requirements and wish to participate can represent their dojo and be part of this international karate community.
